Nepal 1

The First Nepal Project - 2013

In 2013, eight students of the Academy of Engineering and Green Technology (AEGT) in Hartford, Connecticut, working with business and college mentors, made history by designing and building a renewable power system that was sent to Nepal to bring power to the village of Saldang for the first time. 13,000 feet high in the mountains, the village school now has electricity, providing lights, heat, and power for new laptop computers. The village is also using the system to provide reliable power for its new birthing center so that medical personnel can charge its portable ultrasound machine.

This successful project began when students, teachers, alumni and business partners back in Connecticut developed a project aligned to AEGT's engineering and green theme. Throughout the project, students utilized the academic skills they were learning in their classes, and, working with mentors, developed the professional skills they need to be successful in college and the workplace.

All eight of the juniors who were part of the Nepal 1 team graduated from high school last year, and seven of them are currently enrolled in college.

“The Nepal 1 project increased my maturity and responsibility. We knew the kids in Nepal were counting on us to make this work. Actual people were depending on us. I felt important to be part of it.”

“The Nepal project got us used to working hard. And working with businesspeople gave us the sense that we could do this, and not to give up.”
